23Things Reflections
This was a great learning experience for me and it is hard to put down in a few words what I thought about this endeavor but I will try. 1. Blogging is easy and a great way to spread the my library news. 2. I like using Blogger better than Tumblr. 3. Online Communities is where everyone is at 4. Made a Facebook fan page and that was THE BEST thing that happened with the 23Things. 5. I like...

Update 4-23
I have done a lesson on each week of my 23 Things Kansas.  This has been a great learning experience.  If you see a week that you want an explanation about leave a comment.  Next week we have wrap-up webinar sessions.  I am looking forward to finishing.

Week 12 - Screencasting
I’m having trouble having this post.  I hope that I can get this accomplished.  At the bottom of this post I will have a link to my screen cast.  This was fun to make.  I have tried two time, two different ways to get this to post to publish to my Karen’s Klips.  I don’t know why it won’t work.  Let’s hope that the third time is a charm. ...

Week 15 - Wikis
I just added a post to the 23 things Kansas participants wiki.  These are easy to navigate.  I signed up for a Wikipedia account but am hesitant to add or change anything.  I looked up Osborne but wasn’t for sure what to add.  I can see where a wiki would be a good place to coordinate events and not have to send out so many letters or emails.  This way everyone would be on the same page...

Update 4-19-10

Week 13 - Slide Sharing
http://show.zoho.com/public/osbornepubliclibrary/Kids%20After%20School%20-%20Kids%20Walk%20Kansas1 This is the URL for my Slide Sharing presentation.  These are pictures of our after school program.  We are walking across Kansas and each week I have the kids doing different physical activities.  We have walked 358 miles and we need to get to 433 by the end of the month.  I know we can do it. ...

Additions
Week 11 was a catch up week and we didn’t have an assignment.  I need to get caught up with week 12 & 13 now.  I have started on both of them but they are ready to publish. Now that I am home from a great time at KLA maybe I’ll get my loose ends tied up.

Week 14 - Library Thing, etc
I made an account on Shelfari and added to my blog.  I also put it on the library blog and am going to try to use it to show the latest additions to the library.  Visuals are a good thing for patrons. Shelfari was very easy to use.  It let me rate books, mark them as read or want to read, mark them as owned (which is useful for the library) and it lets me make a wish list.  This might be a good...

Follow-up on Week 10 - Videos
I used my flip to create a video the day the rotating book truck came.  I did a narrative as I filmed showing the empty shelves, how I went about choosing how many books I took off of the truck, the time the truck came, the inside of the truck, the stacks of books that I had to begin on, and finally the full shelves again.  I put it up on youtube and I thought I could edit it because it is a clip...

Update on Week 8 - Cloud Computing
I have worked with one of my co-workers with the google docs.  We put the library calendar up there so we could make changes and see how it works.  It is easy to add people to do the editing. I am trying to use the documents in google a little more also.  This should help when I post on the library blogspot and adding things to other sites. Thanks for sharing this tool.

An update
Just an update to the photo lesson.  I now am uploading photos to our library Picasa account.  This has been useful in adding photos and slideshows to our library web page.  www.osbornepubliclibrary.blogspot.com I have a high school student help me keep the web page current and this will make things easier for him also. Thanks for all the learning tools through the 23thingskansas.

Week 9 - Instant Messaging
This is something that I have done for many years.  When my kids went away to college this was an inexpensive way to keep in touch.  We use windows live with the webcam so that we can see the grandbaby.  We also got my 80+ year old father to IM his grandchildren.  This was also a great way to check up on him while he was living alone.  We could tell if he turned his computer on for the day. IM is...

Week 8 - cloud computing
I am back and a little overwhelmed.  I have finished reading and listening to the information on cloud computing.  I think I have more questions than when I started.  It makes me feel like personal back-up systems are the best.  I will begin to work on a project to share with someone to learn to use the ability to share documents.  Be looking for my comments on this. Today, 3-22, my co-worker...

Week 10 - Video on the Web
The video below was activity #1 in week 10.  I’ll be working on an after school program video in the coming weeks.  The video of Kelli that is posted on this blog was taken from YouTube. I am looking forward to using my flip camera and making a short video to post for activity #2.  This is a great way to show patrons what is happening in the library.  My patrons love it when I post...

Week 7 - Microblogging
I have had a twitter account for quite awhile, I just didn’t use it much.  Friends on the coasts got me looking into this way of communicating.  I attended a class that had a survey of students from KU and the outcome was Twitter wasn’t used much in the midwest. With that in mind I jumped in on this anyway.  I found it easy to find people to follow.  I had some friends already in...

Week 6 - Tagging and Social Bookmarking
I chose not to make a Delicious account.  My main reason for doing this was to keep things simplified.  I didn’t want to open another account for the library.  I have been on other people’s accounts and I find them very useful.  Chris Rippel shares information through CKLS with his account.  I have a small staff in a small library and all the computers are bookmarked the same.  If I...

Learning
The one thing that I am learning from all of the technology is that there is so much of it.  I am enjoying the few things that I have mastered and I’m trying to catch up with a bunch of other things.  I do like how google has incorporated many of the everyday things that we use, (docs, pictures, followers, etc…) in one place so I can use one login and password. I am enjoying my 23...

Week 5 - RSS Feeds
I am still getting used to the idea of RSS feeds.  I am using some but this project is making me look a little deeper into the purpose or use of RSS feeds. I chose to go with Google Reader because the library already had a gmail account set up.  I watched the Google Reader videos that were posted on the 23 Things website. I set up RSS feeds for Unshelved because I like the library humor and I...

Week 4 - Photo Sharing
I am getting a little closer to catching up.  I have a google account with the library so I chose to use Picasa so I wouldn’t have to remember so many account logins. I learned how to upload my pictures and then I downloaded them to my library blogspot, (a note: the below site has been known to go to a bible page for some reason.  Hopefully I have the issue resolved.) ...

Week 3 (very late) - Online Meetings
Ok, so I am really behind on my 23 Things Kansas.  I am trying to play catch up so bear with me through the next few posts. Week 3 - Online Meetings I went back into the archives and viewed a Wimba session on Searching Iluminar.  I logged in through the Kansas Flint Hills and Rhonda Machlan gave the presentation.  The session was showing how the public can use the new KLC software.  There are a...

23 Things Kansas - Week 2 - Online Communities
Facebook all the way.  I already had a facebook account so I decided to make a fan page for the library.  It has been WAY to much fun.  I was amazed at all the people who signed on as fans.  As fast as that was happening I knew that I needed to make sure that I updated the page often.  Each day I post a definition or a national celebration day.  I may post trivia questions.  Needless to say it has...

MONDAY!!!!
If this is a chance to tell you what is happening in my library I’ll do my best to give you a Monday morning scene.  My sewer is clogged and when the city came to check it out I got water all over my basement.  Not much time for blogging this am. Koha looks and acts strange today.  Anyone else see a problem??

23 Things Kansas - Week 1 - Blogging
My name is Karen Wallace and I am the librarian for the Osborne Public Library in Osborne, KS.  I decided to do the 23 Things Kansas so I could learn some different networking platforms.  I use some already but it doesn’t hurt to learn new things. I chose tumblr because it was new to me.  It took me awhile to work around this blog platform.  I’m not sure if I like it. I have changed...
